We left water rings on table tops
after chasing pine trees and piano keys
complete with memories of
super moons and pouring rain
it’s all of these that remind us how fragile we are
just kids made of skin and bone
so many different pieces and parts
our veins like strings keeping us tied to hearts
that we pluck and strum until we’re all but won.
Somehow we became freaks with crooked smiles,
your bitten nails and my pony tails,
in the driver’s seat, passing state lines and speed limit signs.
We’re just people living in our wonder years
spelled out with lettered tiles across hundreds of miles.
In between missed calls and tangled heart strings
we learned to start embracing water rings and fragile things.
