You didn’t get to be twenty by not being careful
that’s what you said seconds before the sky fell down
when the lightening stole our attention.
I said it was only heat lightening
that we’d make it before the storm
when the rain started to slap the ground
trickling down our faces like tears
as we laughed and ran
back to the house and the car,
to shelter and security.
The windshield wiper blades
sweeping back and forth
pushing away the rain that fell
proving that it wasn’t just heat lightening,
that we never would have made it
but I didn’t get to be nineteen by being careful.
